Collector's Annual Report

As we continue down the road of tax collection, we have made some significant strides in the office. The new tax collection software, which was appropriated at last year's Annual Town Meeting, is in place, and the fiscal year 1999 tax bills were printed from it. However, 1999 is the only year currently on the new software due to time constraints in the office. This coming year we plan to get the data from the old program into the new program, while keeping current with the collection process. Until the transition is completed, we will be running two programs.

We continue moving property with unpaid taxes into Tax Title at a steady pace. Taking property for taxes is not something that is beneficial to the Town as it ties up property until it goes to land court, but if taxes go unpaid, that is not beneficial to the Town either.

Motor Vehicle Excise collection continues to run smoothly. Unpaid excise bills are turned over to the Deputy Collector. Kelly and Ryan, the Deputy, has a direct link to the Registry of Motor Vehicles computer, making it more efficient for his office to flag a driver's license and license plates for non-payment of tax bills.

Lee Mikkola continues to expand his knowledge of the tax collection process and tax laws. He is an asset to the office, and I thank him for all the hard work he does. He ensures that payments are posted accurately, he researches records and municipal liens, and he answers questions in general.

As always, we continue to strive towards the timely collection of taxes to benefit all of us who reside in Ashby.
