    Rabies Summary Report

    December 1999

The laboratory received 174 specimens for rabies testing in December. The specimens testing positive included 14 skunks and 5 raccoons. Six human and thirty-six animal exposures resulted from the positive specimens. The specimens represented 16 towns in nine counties. The raccoon strain of rabies virus was identified in all animals from December.

In 1999, 3270 animals were submitted for testing, an 8% decrease from the 3938 specimens received during 1998. There was a 45% decrease in positive specimens from 498 to 226 in 1998 and 1999 respectively. The positive animals in 1999 included 114 skunks, 78 raccoons, 21 bats, 5 foxes, 4 woodchucks, 3 cats, and 1 dog.
