The Department of Food and Agriculture has changed the Barn Book inspection. As there is a pressing need to deal with animal health and welfare issues quickly and efficiently, the local Inspector if animals will be inspecting in accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 129 section 19. The inspection for Ashby will be the same as before. The form left on the premises will give the date of the inspection, if no problems were noted or problems needing correction are addressed on the attached form.
FOUND January 26, a grey and white pet rabbit (Home found April 10)

Rabies Summary Report
December 1999
The laboratory received 174 specimens for rabies testing in December. The specimens testing positive included 14 skunks and 5 raccoons. Six human and thirty-six animal exposures resulted from the positive specimens. The specimens represented 16 towns in nine counties. The raccoon strain of rabies virus was identified in all animals from December.
In 1999, 3270 animals were submitted for testing, an 8% decrease from the 3938 specimens received during 1998. There was a 45% decrease in positive specimens from 498 to 226 in 1998 and 1999 respectively. The positive animals in 1999 included 114 skunks, 78 raccoons, 21 bats, 5 foxes, 4 woodchucks, 3 cats, and 1 dog.
