Ashby Free Public Library

A Fascinating Rhythm

Tuesday, July 19 at 3:00 pm

The Ashby Free Public Library is pleased to announce a special performance by Boston educator and musician Cornell Coley, AKA Sugarfoot,  called “A Fascinating Rhythm” on Tuesday, July 19 at 3:00 at the Library, 812 Main Street, Ashby.

This 1-man, interactive program begins with "Sugarfoot" introducing the concept of the body as the first instrument. Then he plays on small instruments meant for travel - the musical bow, talking drum, families of bells, shakers and the human voice.

After this impressive display, he starts playing polyrhythms on larger drums, accompanied by their dances. Students are then asked to play parts.

Next thing you know, a youth ensemble is playing! Then a dance is being taught! Soon, the whole audience is singing and learning dance steps!  The finale is an audience jam session with call-and-response playing - a boisterous carnival of drum and dance! See a video

60-minutes              Ages K - 12

The performance is free and open to the public.  It is funded by the Friends of the Ashby Library and the AFPL Fund, in support of the Summer Reading Program ‘One World, Many Stories’.
