This chart shows the population in absolute numbers. You can see the decline in the Towns population starting about 1850 and lasting untill 1900. This was due to the decline of agriculture in New England, the higher paying jobs to be found in the newly industrial cities and the opening of the west. Another major change takes place in late 1940's as the population begins to grow again. This is due to increased affluence of the middle class, the desire to live in a suburban location and higher mobility provided by the automobile. This trend continues today. Factors that may influence population in the future are improvements in telecomunications/internet and the general migration to Southern portions of the country.
